Olympic mosaics by Tessa Hunkin and Friends
From July 2011 to May 2012 a team of dedicated volunteers worked in a shop in Murray Grove, Hackney, to create a series of large wall mosaics for a park in nearby Shepherdess Walk. The designs were created by mosaicist Tessa Hunkin and inspired by the ancient mosaics of Roman North Africa. The idea was to commemorate the year of the Olympics in a classical art form that conjured up both the ancient past and the life of modern Hackney.
