Light and Colour in Byzantine Art

This deals with colour in Byzantium in terms of practical aspects (what we know about how it was made and used) and of aesthetics (what Byzantine attitudes to colour were).

Dr. James was able to consult Ernest Hawkins, the great restorer Byzantine mosaics, just before his death in 1993, and uses many of his photographs.

(His archive of images relating to his work on Byzantine frescoes and mosaics is now held by the Slide Library of the Courtauld Institute, London).

Price: £60
