21.New course ‘Earthworks – making and painting with natural
pigments’ Di Pattison. July 7th £75.00. Most materials included.
This highly innovative artist and experienced tutor will focus on encouraging you to make and use REAL earth pigments from rocks and soils. Practical experiments will be augmented with a brief survey of their uses in art history and at contemporary commercial products and their suppliers. You will be able to make, experiment with and take away samples of oil paint, egg tempera, water based colours and acrylics. Save yourself pounds and learn how to continue developing paints at home using everyday household products. All materials supplied at a charge of £5.00.

22. New course ‘A natural response to drawing - using made and
‘found’ tools’ Di Pattison. July 8th. £75.00. Make your own pastels, inks and pens from earth, plant and other natural materials and traditional recipes. Making your own drawing tools will give very different results, which will liven and loosen up your work, affecting the kind of drawings you produce in a spontaneous and creative way. Make pens from twigs, feathers, reeds, canes etc and experiment with their uses. Pastels can also be easily made. Have fun and be stimulated creatively through practical experimentation, observation and discussion to encourage continued exploration at home. A charge of £3.00 to be paid to the tutor for materials supplied. Take home some samples and notes.

23. New course ‘The complete Drawing Summer School for all artists’
Angela Dammery/William Calladine. July 8 – 13th. £295.00. (£20.00 discount if also on 22.) Experienced artists and tutors Bill and Angela just love drawing and are joining forces to offer a comprehensive drawing course covering all aspects leading to improved drawing prowess. So whether you are a beginner or experienced artist or craftsperson this course will push your imaginative and technical skills to the limits; propelling your drawing expertise forward. Discover the dynamics and mechanics of perspective, proportioning and composition and learn how the ‘old masters’ achieved their great drafting skill with the aid of the Camera Obscura and Camera Lucida. Make lively drawn interpretations, sometimes with added colour, of life models, flowers, still life, landscape and portraits, using a variety of drawing media from graphite, charcoal and pen and ink, to found and made tools. 24.‘Dramatic ways with light and watercolour’ July 14/15/16th. Ian
Scott Massie.. £195.00. A warm welcome to Scott, a well respected and sought after fine artist and enthusiastic tutor in his home county of Yorkshire, whose roots lie in the British Romantic School of the 30’s and 40’s. His inspirational teaching and imaginative use of watercolour and mixed media will encourage you to break new ground, get out of a rut, liven up and loosen up your paintings. Strengthen the impact of your watercolour landscapes with strong dramatic tonal contrasts of light and shade. A part studio - part location based course. (Weather permitting)

25. ‘Seago watercolours’ July 21/22. John Tookey. £175.00. John is able to inspire every watercolourist with his numerous effortless demonstrations and masterly loose handling of watercolour in its most pure traditional English form. This course will include visits to some of the well known landscape locations, typical of this unique and wild Broadland environment and often frequented and loved by the late impressionistic oil and watercolour painter, Edward Seago. It may be possible to arrange a visit to The Dutch House (Seago’s former home) by kind permission of the owner Jane Seymour at a small extra cost.

26. ‘Wide Norfolk skies in watercolour’ Sun July 22nd (8.00pm start) – Frid 27th. Charles Evans. £260.00. The flatness of Norfolk allows for the most amazing skies and endless cloud formations and colour variations. We are delighted that Charlie so loves North Norfolk and the Broads that he will be tutoring another watercolour landscape course at BAC in ’07. Lively TV star and author of numerous books and videos, Charlie’s charismatic and spirited delivery combined with his considerable watercolour expertise, will ensure everyone has a fun holiday as well as plenty of tuition through demonstration and one to one guidance throughout. As much work as possible will be location based in the beautiful North Norfolk countryside and coastline, with a few sessions taking place in the studio. 27. ‘Drawing reality’ July 28/29th. William Calladine. ££155.00. (£10.00 discount if also on 28.) An essential drawing primer for those joining ‘Painting reality’ courses – particularly Stage 1, as it covers all the ingredients required for drawing and planning out your designs prior to painting in the Classical manner. It will also give a tremendous boost of drawing skill to anyone who has difficulty achieving accurate representations of objects in space. Suitable for the determined beginner and more experienced painter, it deals with some aspects of perspective in depth. A rarely to be found and exacting course, but ultimately so rewarding!

28. ‘Painting reality in oils - Stage 1’ Sun July 29 (8.00pm start) – Frid August 3rd. William Calladine. £260.00. Nowhere else will you find this oil painting course as William only tutors at BAC. This is Stage 1 of a unique 3 part series of oil painting experiences in the Classical Northern European style of Rembrandt, Rubens and the Dutch masters of still life and uses traditional methods, recipes and materials of the Old Masters. Transform your work and reach heights of painting prowess - never imagined. This series is now widely accepted as unique worldwide, attracting participants from many countries. 29. ‘More water in watercolour’ Sun August 5th (8.00pm start) – Frid
10th. Joe Dowden. £270.00. Joe is a diligent and enthusiastic tutor who loves to pass on everything he knows. His handling of water in watercolour is a joy to behold and he is very generous with his knowledge, all imparted in a friendly and easy to understand teaching style. He punctuates the practical sessions with many demonstrations at every stage to clearly explain his unique watercolour painting processes. This is a part location, part studio based course, visiting many idyllic watery spots in this wonderful wetland national park. Sessions in the studio will largely cover new techniques, making this course suitable for all watercolourists wishing to further their skills. If needed, beginners will be given particular attention in a separate session at the beginning.

30.New course ‘The Plein – air sketcher’ Walking and sketching in the
Norfolk Broads’ with David Hurrell. Pencil, pen and watercolour. August 11/12/13th. £195.00. Dilham is an ideal starting point for several notable walks. This course is designed for a small group and will suit the more active artist with a penchant for country rambling and a desire to improve drawing skills. No more fussy and overworked studio paintings from photographs, this is the real thing. Become an ‘Impressionist’ for a few days, enjoying short walks along well accessed paths, sketch book in hand. Emphasis will be on the development of observational drawing skill with some simple added colour. You will be able to seek out the ‘essence’ of the Broads landscape with the added benefit of a more intimate experience of its flora and fauna.

31.‘Sail and paint the East Coast rivers on Thames sailing barge

32.‘Grids to stitch - Hand and or machine creative embroidery.’ Jan
Beaney. Sept 4/5th. £160.00. Work with this very experienced and imaginative professional creative embroiderer and Textile Degree course tutor. A firm favourite at BAC for many years, Jan’s enthusiasm and creative energy and original ideas inspire all her students to great things. This is an innovative and experimental course exploring design possibilities that grids can offer. Inspiration will be taken from historical artifacts and Jan will provide all the reference material needed.


33.‘Impressionistic flowers in watercolour and mixed media’.
Sue Williams. Sept 8/9th. £175.00. Acrylic inks are vibrant and exciting. Combined with watercolour they can also produce very subtle colours and interesting backgrounds. Learn how to paint flowers in a loose ‘Impressionistic’ way. You will also be shown how to use salts, cling film, and masking fluid imaginatively by this experienced, enthusiastic, innovative and exceptionally popular tutor.

34.‘A Broad sketch book’ Pen and wash and pencil and wash.
Sue Williams. Sept 9 – 14th. £270.00. If fine, an optional river excursion by boat and buffet meal on board is planned for the tuition free afternoon on Wed 12th. (Additional cost approx: £8.00) Take home memories of the Broads in a pen and wash sketch book which may contain quick sketches and notes for finished drawings and paintings, wide views and close up studies. There will be demos and plenty of ‘one to one’ guidance throughout to explain traditional ideas as well as exciting new ones. Experiment with a multitude of techniques to help you draw and paint the beautiful Broads scenery including, wind mills, boats, waterways and old buildings.

35. NEW COURSE! ‘Down the garden path. Creative gardening with
pebble mosaic and planting’ Andrew Fawcett. Sept 15/16th. £185.00. If your garden needs re vamping or you need to start from scratch, then join this course and plan a garden to truly reflect your personality. With the help of this keen innovative and imaginative gardener, plantsman and practical artist/craftsman, produce an effective and individual garden plan based on your own garden plot dimensions, photographs of it and preferences. Make a pebble mosaic picture, or one from glass Tessera, incorporating favourite pieces of broken china or pots, to make a decorative pictorial slab, house number or name plate for your garden wall, inset into paving, or on a table top. Work with this highly imaginative professional felt maker, fine artist and gifted tutor. An opportunity to explore a wide range of possibilities for making accessories to wear, or to decorate hats and bags, using mixed media and simple seamless felting methods. All necessary equipment will be provided.

37.‘Felt your thoughts - Alternative fibre books ‘ Ewa Kuniczak.
Sept 29/30th. £160.00. Break new ground with this talented and innovative artist and enthusiastic and experienced tutor. Create your own special journal, original heirloom or memory book, using felting and fibre fusing techniques, as well as painting and lettering, to describe a particular event, occasion, experience, collection of ideas, or an illustration of a favourite poem or text. You will be examining various types of ‘book’ forms and developing ideas to suit individual projects, together with surface treatments and transfer - printing digital images. Essential equipment will be provided including printers, scanners and computers. Prior knowledge of computing is not essential.

OCTOBER
38. ‘Etching for all’. October 26/27/ 28th. Richard Bawden.
£220.00. Richard is an elected member of the Royal Society of Painter – Printmakers and studied printmaking at the Royal College of Art. Like his father Edward Bawden, Richard has always worked as a professional and versatile artist with commissions in engraved glass, murals, cast iron furniture and book illustration. This course offers a variety of safe etching techniques to the complete novice as well as the more experienced printmaker. Some materials are provided, others can be purchased direct from the tutor at cost.
A 2 hour pre course session for complete beginners to printmaking is highly recommended from 7 – 9.00pm on Thursday October 25th at an additional cost of £15.00.

39.New course ‘Bags of fun ‘ Creative crocheted, knitted and applique’d
fabric bags for unique presents. Penny Graham - Jones and Kit Calladine. Nov 3/4th. £160.00. Penny and Kit will help you turn all those lovely left – overs of fabric, wool, yarn, thread, buttons, beads and ribbon into gorgeous colourful and textured bags for unique presents for friends and family, using combinations of knit, crochet and stitch. Why not make a really useful alternative to the traditional Christmas stocking to hold that special gift!

40.‘Construct a cloth’ Creative embroidery. Jean Littlejohn. November
8/9th. £160.00. We are delighted to again welcome Jean to BAC. She is such a gifted inspirational artist, designer and tutor that her courses are always oversubscribed and tremendous fun. A firm favourite at BAC she is offering a workshop which will involve making a series of cloths exploiting hand and machine embroidery in a variety of innovative ways to include mixed media, fabric, paper, plastics and threads.

41.New course ‘Creative natural dying for all artists.’ Di Pattison. Nov 10th £75.00. Join this qualified and experienced teacher, Fine Artist, art historian, and designer to explore some unusual natural dying techniques. Not only can natural dye stuffs be obtained from wild plants and certain kitchen products, they can also be made from earth, fungi, tree products and garden plants too. Natural dying is surprisingly versatile, having links with inks and paints and can be used for patchwork materials, tie and dye for cloth and paper, resist dye, space dye, and bleaching on cloth, wool, paper, board etc. This introductory discovery day is ideal for supplying textilists, painters, printmakers and art teachers with enough information to stimulate far deeper investigation.

42.‘What can I paint and draw in the winter? ’Angela Dammery. Nov
16th. £75.00. Winter is a wonderful opportunity for experimentation and investigating new directions, methods, materials and ideas. But where do you start? This course aims to show how you can develop your creativity using unusual references and familiar things and places around you as starting points. Develop ideas into schemes of creative work to take you right through the winter months. Mainly using coloured pencils, pen & ink and watercolour. Some collage and mixed media may also be incorporated.

43.‘Fantasy buildings in stump work’ Creative embroidery. Jenny Adin.
Nov 17/18th. £160.00. Work with this lively and enthusiastic creative embroiderer and Graduate of the Royal School of Needlework. Produce highly imaginative embroidered pieces based on interpretations of mythical and fantasy buildings such as fairytale castles, grottos, ginger bread houses etc - using a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Tudor embroidery technique of Stump work. If you have not tried this technique before and you love working on a small intricate scale, then this fascinating form of raised and padded embroidery is for you.
